Gibson SG Special

Gibson SG Special (1959- 1978)

In 1959 until early 1961 the SG Special had a double rounded cutaway and were made with rounded horns, they had no model name on the peg head and were made in cherry or cream finish.

In 1961 the Gibson SG Les Paul Standard and the Gibson SG Les Custom were introduced on the market and until this day these Gibson guitars are some of the most popular electric guitars ever made. They had 2 pointed twin cutaways, the SG Les Paul Custom was finished in black or white (3 hum buckers) and the SG Les Paul Standard was finished in cherry red (2 hum buckers).

In 1961 another double pointed cutaway style body emerged on the market and was called the Gibson SG Special, the SG Special was basically a another but less fancy version of the SG Les Paul Standard, it had 2 P-90 soap bar pickups, dot inlays (not trapezoid), pearl Gibson logo on the peg head, nickel hardware, wrap around tailpiece, mahogany body, small pick guards, bound neck like the standard and were finished in cherry red or white (cream) finish.

In 1962 Gibson maestro vibratos were optional and in late 1966 larger pick guards were fitted surrounding the pickups which had no frames. In 1978 the SG Special was discontinued.

From 1971 to present the SG Special was introduced and redesigned bearing different names.

Gibson SG Pro (1971-1974)
The Gibson SG Pro had 2 black mini hum buckers (some with P-90's), a tune-o-matic bridge, Bigsby vibrato, and were made in walnut and natural mahogany finishes.

SG Special I (1983-1985)
Dot markers, exposed hum bucker with 2 knobs.

SG Special II (1983-1985)
Same as the Special I but with 2 hum buckers and 3 knobs.

SG Special (1985-2019)
Original SG Special Reintroduced and redesigned through out these years starting with 1 pickup and 2 knobs from 1985 to 1986.. Later 2 pickups, 3 knobs until 1996 and 4 knobs, dot markers, 2 hum buckers until 2019.

SG Special New Country (2006-2008)
Full body mirror including guard and truss rod cover.

SG Special VOS (2006-2013)
Mahogany body custom shop, bound rosewood board and dot inlays also came with a certificate. Available in various colors including TV Yellow and faded cherry.

SG Special EMG (2007)
Had EMG pickups, 4 knobs, 3 way toggle switch, all black hardware.

SG Special 60's Tribute (2011-2018)
Small guard, 2 P-90's, slim taper 60's neck and worn finish options.

* Other models include the SG Special Robot line of guitars introduced in 2008 with robot tuners.*

It's tough to tell from those pictures. If you can post a clear shot of the back at the neck heel it might be easier. Generally speaking, the easiest way to ID guitars from pictures is by taking clear shots of the body front (include up to 17th fret or so), the body back (including the full heel), the headstock front, and the headstock back (include up to the 2nd fret or so).

    re: Missing s/n
As far as I know Gibson only stamped the s/n on the back of the headstock on SGs of that era. It's possible with a blacklight you may be able to see an outline but i'm not sure about that.

I bought a SG a 4 years ago gave $400. It was sold as a 1971 but I was never sure, I though it was older. I have never seen a SG like this one. It is very plan, dot inlays, gold Gibson name on head, cheery, 2 pickups (one original soap bar the other has been changed) small pick guard, but it has 2 turn knobs and 2 slide switchs. I'm sure it was the cheapest one made. The numbers show it to beween 66 and 69, going by the SG sites but I would love to know more. Numbered 737001

    re: 737001

Dunno specifically about your SG because there's some weird ones out there, specially in the early 70s! Sounds like an SG Jr. but I thought they only had a single pickup in the bridge position. I can say it's not a Special or Standard but that doesn't tell you much. If there's a volute and made-in-USA stamp it's probably from 1970 or later, but with no volute/stamp it's from 69 or earlier. Earlier than 69 would also have a one-piece neck rather than a three piece.
    Hope that helps!

i have a Gibson SG witch i had originally thought was a 1961 the number on the back of the head stock is 177590 with Made In USA printed under. this doesn't make sense to me because Made In USA was stamped after the 70's and a few times in the 50's but 177590 means it must be made in 1964. whats up with this?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anonymous11:11 AM

    re: 177590
There's exceptions to every rule but your SG was mostly likely built after 1970 and could have been built as late as 1975. Best bet is to read this entire blog and check the 'features' on your SG. If it's a large guard with a Lyre you probably have a 1970-1971. If it's a small-guard with a stoptail or with a Bigsby you probably have a 1972-1975. From 72-74 SG Standards had an unbound ebody board, then from 75 onwards it was bound rosewood.
This is all from memory so could be completely wrong! One thing that's fairly certain is if it has a volute and a made-in-usa, it's a 70-later SG.
If the pots are original you can pull the backing plate and check the number to date it.

I bought a guitar today and it looks identical to the guitar at the top of the page (the dark red one) but I don't think it's gibson. It just says Vintage on the head. also the inlay is not dots it is rectangles. It also doesn't have a tremelo arm. Anyone have any ideas what make this is? The serial # on the back is I07120133.
Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated.

I'm kinda puzzeled about my guitar, since it has an SG body, but the neck and pickguard are les paul parts. the serial is 615806.
My father, who bought it from a friend, was told it's supposed to be a really rare one, but we never really believed in that.
i'd just like to know from when it is and if it really is that rare, probable price would be nice to know, but I don't intend to sell it.

his 67 SG special was the same guitar as a 67 SG standard in other
words he put full sized humbuckers
in it without having to route the
body... from my understand all SG specials with p-90s need to have
the pickup cavities routed to accomadate PAF style pickup. Is this true

  16. Here's a puzzle for you. The serial number on my SG Special is 501740, making it either a 1965 or 1968. However, it does NOT have P-90 pickups, it has mini-humbuckers. It does NOT have dot inlays, it has block inlays. And it has the small pickguard. "SG" is not stamped on the truss rod cover. The finish is clearly cherry if you look at the back, but looks like something brown on the front, I'm thinking because someone left it in a pawnshop window for too long and the original cherry finish faded. From the descriptions and pictures I've seen, this Special does not match what I'd expect for a 65 or 68, which is what the serial number indicates. Any ideas?

Hi SG fans! I have an 1963 SG Special, although I only figured out it's a Special because of the dot inlay. It's not for sale and it's not in perfect shape. I was just out of college when I bought it on layaway for $350 in 1993. FYI, pickguard was removed and pickups replaced by a previous owner, but the tremolo and Grover pegs are original. The neck is still straight. It says Gibson and has a very low number on the back, although I can't tell you exactly 'cuz I'm overseas and it's in storage (with A/C, don't worry).

My question is about the one I didn't buy: a later model SG, I think '69, that was $450 and therefore too expensive at the time. I can't find any info about the vine inlay on late '60s SGs. One day I'd like to own one, it was so pretty. Can anybody help me, please?

    Thanks and keep rockin'!

  24. Anonymous3:07 AM

Sorry, correction. FYI without looking, I think it is the double humbuckers that are original and the whammy bar was what was replaced. I've been overseas 5 years so I can't remember all the details.

Hi, just found this most interesting blog. I have what I think is a 1976 SG Special (at least it looks like the one in the 1976 Gibson catalogue on everythingsg.com): mother-of-pearl block inlays (including one at the 1st fret, which seems quite rare), plain headstock except for pearl Gibson logo, plain truss rod cover, small scratchplate, brass nut, very narrow neck, only 40mm at the nut, it originally had black mini-humbuckers and witches' hat knobs with steel pointers underneath, serial 114954, 'made in USA' stamped underneath.

I bought it as a student, way back in 1980, for GBP 225 second-hand and I think the shop owner said it was a '74 model but I've never seen another one quite like it. It came with the black plastic angular case with red plush lining and had a cherry finish that's long since faded to brown.

I'm less interested in what it's worth, for several reasons: soon after I got it I changed the pickups and put normal humbuckers in [yes, I chiseled the cavities out to make them fit. OK, I was young and foolish, but I really didn't like the sound from those pups, they squealed like anything with hi-gain amps and the humbuckers gave me just the sound I wanted], I swapped the witches' hats for pillbox type knobs that I thought looked less old-fashioned, also the headstock got broken in about 1988/9; it's been repaired but you can see the mend and the refinish wasn't too good either, so from a resale point of view it's neither original nor in great shape, but I love it dearly and it's the last guitar I would sell if forced by circumstances.

What I'd really like to know is when (and where) was it made?

I have been building and playing guitars for a long time. Years ago when still naive, I was talked into buying an SG pro while visiting a store in new York. It didn't take long to figure out it was the black sheep of the SG family. Whacky neck set that never felt right and atrocious routing job that removed half the mahogany of the body, 80% of the structural integrity and a lot of the tone. I sold it soon after.
Recently someone gave me the same model that had been sitting n their closet for 25 years, neck joint failed and poorly repaired and just a reminder to him of a similar store experience. he just wanted it gone!
I decided to see what it would take to make this into a great guitar by reverse engineering it.The steps taken were:
    1.Glue up all cracks properly
2.Plug all routed/drilled holes including the control cavity and poorly placed bridge and added stop tail piece holes
    3. remove neck from body
4.Thickness sand body removing 1/8" off the top
5.Glue 3/16" mahogany cap on top body surface both for cosmetic and structural reinforcement
6.Reset the neck, losing half the height at the end of the extension and angling back about 2 degrees
7.blending the mahogany cap into the existing carved edges of the body
8.blending the new neck heel into the body in the tradition of SG's at the time
9.routing cavities for humbuckers without excess
10.control cavity routed from back of guitar as in most SG's
    11.refretting and finally...
10.refinishing which is where I am at now

The guitar feels fantastic. The neck is excellent. It had some issues at the very end of the board from its original fret job but they were minimal. I have cut a 5 ply b/w/b pickguard of the small variety and will try both a set of the fralin P-92's and ironically the early Tokai PAF 57's which I have. An insane amount of work but it shows that sometimes the wrong people are put in charge of production and dumb thing happen. Not the guitars fault, blame 'the man'.
I get to play lots of vintage stuff and this is a great SG.
Reverse engineering can take a clunker and make it a classic!

I have 2 gibson solid body electric guitars that I am looking for advice on the approximate values.

    First up

Gibson SG Celebrity Series Limited Edition. Serial # 92181433, I think this guitar was built around '88. It is Black with Gold Pick-ups and hardware, a black ebony neck with mother of pearl inlays on the fret board. I have the original case and I would say it is in Verry Good condition.

    Next up:

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask about this one, but here goes.

Is a Gibson guitar from the late 50's- early 60's I would guess.....It looks like a miniture version of a Les Paul, I mean it is sized for a child (or a very small person). I think someone told me it was a Gibson Junior, does that ring any bells? The serial # on this one is 0 3033.
Is has a sunburst finish with a rosewood neck. Case is included. It is in good condition.

I have a 1969 Gibson SG that I purchased in the 1990s at mint condition in Houston at Rockin Robin's. It took a spill and cracked the headstock. It was professionally reset by the gibson guitar tech at Rockin Robin's and still plays fine and holds tune. Did I kill all of the resale value?

confused...I purchased a badly damaged Gibson SG back in the mid 70's. It has dot inlays on the neck, large pick plate, two double humbucker style pu and has an ebony block on back bridge. sr# indicates 1966 but pots are 1969. Original owner stated he ordered it special from Gibson, cant find him now. What are your thoughts?

    Hi

I own a 68 SG custom with maestro vibrato #835253. Guitar is rough, think Stevie Ray Vaughn Lenny, but plays nice and all original missing the Tremolo arm. No prior damage, neck is well seated, no repairs. Has hada few holes drileed in headstock for a slide retainer. Any ideas or comments on value ? Does anyone have a tremolo arm?

    Thanks

I have a Gibson SG, I think it's a 1972 Deluxe. #614488 Made in USA, chrome pickups embosed with Gibson, bixby, triangle shaped pickup guard and separate half-moon guard around the tone/volume knobs, cherry finish, rectangular pearl inlays, headstock with Gibson at the top and a crown in the center, machine heads with Gibson on the back. What do you think? What's it worth? Thanks!

    Hi Guys,
Was just wondering if someone could confirm that my SG is a Special. Serial number is 499343 with 'Made in USA' stamped on the head, 'Gibson Deluxe' on the machine heads, rectangular pearl neck inlays, plain black plastic nut cover, plain black pick guard (small lower only), perhaps a three-piece neck(?), black plastic enclosed pickups, cherry red finish and I picked it up in 1975. She's a bit battered and faded, but still loved.
    Thanks in advance.

Can anybody give me any info?
mfg date/ ballpark value? It's all original. The pick guard has lifted a bit on the outside edge and it has a 2" gouge just through the finish below the vol/tone dials.

Hi, I inherited a vintage SG from my father who purchased it in the 60's. He's not sure when, and i've been having trouble trying to date it, and get a value on it. Serial#263633, is white, with dot inlays, 2 p-90 pickups, nothing else to go by. Headstock says gibson, but no crown, and truss cover looks original but has no writing on it (plain black). I play it. It shows a little wear, but not much for being 40years old. My Dad also said he had a Bigsby tremolo installed right after he bought it. So, i'm sure that declines value some. But, any help would be great! Love this guitar, plays very nice...even with a Bigsby.

I have a 1965 Gibson SG Jr that needs restored. The neck and body is in great shape, it just needs to be repainted. There's no visible serial number on it that I could find, but the pots in it are 1965 based on the serial numbers on them. Where would the serial number be on the guitar?

    Thanks!

  79. Hey,

I have a, what is according to Gibson's SN data sheet ( http://www.gibson.com/Files/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf ), a '70, '71 or '72 SG Standard. It is dark cherry, has a large pickgaurd that surrounds both chrome covered humbucking pickups and appears to be skinny at the nut and rather thick back to the neck (when compared against modern SG's). The Serial number from this guitar is 922634 and was just wondering if the date on it could be narrowed down.

I own a Pete Townshend Gibson SG, a replica of the Live at Leeds Concert. There were 250 made..the first 10 were Pete Townshend's personal guitars. I own #2. I met Pete Townshend years ago and he told me that I have the most valuable because his son owns #1 and that will never go into circulation. It signed by Pete, the back of the neck says "PTP 002" which means Pete Townshend's personal does any know how much this is worth?

Howdy everyone...I just have one question...I recently found a 1968 gibson SG Special all original with p-90 pickups and all, with the serial number 870185...it is in complete operating condition and plays great...it has only had one major repair in the headstock which was done about 20 years ago and hasn't been messed with sense due to a quality repair job...I feel like this guitar is going to be sold fast and want to act, but my question is does anyone feel that $890 is too much? And also, is the Special that much of a downgrade from the Standard if its really from the 60's? Remember, this is the REAL DEAL vintage guitar...it has ware, but thats okay with me so long as everything checks out and works fine...also, do you think this will go up in value over time? its also an investment thing for me as well...Thanks so much, and PLEASE ANYONE can answer this post! I want to get it tomorrow if reasonable deal!!

hello, I have a 1962 SG Special, serial #21378. I bought it used in 1974. Unfortunately, at the time I refinished it and replaced the PUs with Humbuckers and replaced the tuners with grovers. I've since refinished it yet again and have replaced the bridge with a tune-a-matic with added fine tuners. The finish is very professional looking, many hand rubbed coats, but alas not the original. It has a crack in where the head meets the neck, but doesn't seem to affect anything. Would it be worth more if I tried to restore the original finish and hardware? What might it be worth as is?

Many years ago I saw an article about Les Paul and Mary Ford. She was holding a '61 White Sg Custom with a Mary Ford name plate on it. One of a kind no doubt. Any idea of value and if its still around. Also I saw a supposed one of a kind sunburst '62 SG Standard in a magazine. Cool stuff. Gibson Painting department experiment I guess.

I own a gibson sg. I bought it second hand in 1985.The bill of the shop says it is a gibson sg special serial nr 391829.The color is wine red.
Because the first digit of nr is unreadable (.91829) I’m not sure about the nr. Or the model.
The number is impressed into the headstock. The words “made in usa” are NOT on the headstock. No further inlays or text on the headstock.
No neck ore headstock binding. The neck has block inlays.
It has a small pickguard, a tune o matic bridge, 2 black gibson minihumbuckers, and black barrel knobs, The jack is at the front of the guitar.
The tuners (now these are shallers) are not original as is the bridge. Further is the head repaired (it has been broken) and it has a few nasty holes in the body from a “split pickup experiment” in a dark period of it’s youth. :-(
I wonder what the model and the year of this sg is. And what its value might be.?

Ps. I’m not planning to sell it, because it is the best sounding and playable guitar I own.

I have a late 60's Gibson SG Standard. Serial number is 902646. It doesn't appear on any charts that I've found so far. It's missing the tremolo arm and the cover over the neck adjustment nut on the head of the instrument. Color is walnut. Amazingly, after sitting in my attic for years, it was still in tune and the action great.

The back is scratched up from belt buckles. Otherwise still decent looking and very playable. Looks like the Angus Young model.

I am the original owner. It was bought at Manny's in New York approximately 1968. I was still in High School.

What can you tell me about the value of this instrument? What does the serial number tell you about the manufacture date?

    Hi
I have been collecting Gibson guitars for over 10 years, I have a few now, but there is one guitar that I have that is a mystery to me.
It is a 70s Gibson SG,
It has a gloss finish mahogany, Same body shape as my other 74 SG Standard. It has a thin there piece neck that is unbound, it has a neck a volute. It has a rosewood fret board, nice grain in it and with block inlays. Has the same headstock shape as my other SG Standard, but this one douse not have the thistle logo on the headstock, just has the Gibson mop script on th headstock face, plain black truss rod cover. On back of the headstock is the serial number 173776 with made in USA under the number. It has vintage speed knobs with pointers, The pot codes date to 36 week of 1973.
The mystery with this SG is that came with factory equipped mini humbuckers! they both have patent stickers on the bottom, wirring looks original, I have never seen any were an SG with block inlays and original mini hums, I have a SG 90 with mini hum, I know that they als came in the SG 100 and the SG Deluxe. but this SG Standard is a mystery to me. Some one said that 73 SG Special had mini hums and block inlays, is this correct, is it a rare model?
I will appreciate any help and all feedback with this guitar. what would be aprox value, in good condition little wear?
    Thank you
    Philip

Hi, I have what I believe to be an SG Special '74-'75. Serial number is 105559, stamped into back of head, along with Made in USA. It has rectangular inlays, no 'crown' inlay under the Gibson logo, small black pick guard with what I think are black 'mini humbuckers' not soap bars. Finish is a beautifully faded cherry, all original as far as I can tell.

Question is the Serial Number info I have found conflicts, it could be '63-'67, or '74-'75, can anyone help me decide which year it is?

I inherited a circa 1968 Gibson Melody Maker in Pelham Blue, headstock #940651, with original scratchplate, pegs, knobs, and whammy bar. Some cracks in the neck; finish is a little rough (scratches on the back, but front is cleaner). I'm not really a guitarist, so that's about the entirety of what I know about it! Any thoughts as to a general range of what it might be worth?

    Many thanks.

any help here would be appreciated:
    brown SG Standard ( i believe )
    body/neck structure is sound -
not all original hardware - use to have tremolo with trapezoid - replaced with stop tailpiece and has been modded - coil tap and phase switches - 2 in pick guard and 2 in body between toggle and volume / tone
neck pick up original (cover removed)
    bridge pickup replaced with dimarzio
serial number 300001 / Made in America on back of headstock
    mid 60's or 74-75?

  132. I have a 1965 Gibson SG Junior electric guitar serial number 273984. I have owned it since 1973. It was modified in the 1980's at my request by guitar builder Tony Hunt of North Little Rock. A second P-90 "dog ear" pickup was added at the fingerboard position, a toggle switch added, and a new pickguard cut (rather poorly, which surprised me, considering Hunt's reputation) to accommodate the additional pickup. The bridge is a Leo Quan "Badass" which I installed sometime in the 1980's. I may still have the original stop tailpiece, but for the life of me I can't find it. Action is perfect. Very fast with no buzzes. Frets have never been touched that I know of, yet are in very good shape with just a little pitting on a couple of frets. The guitar is in good, playable shape with everything functioning as it should. There are some scratches and dings, but overall, I'd say it's normal wear and tear for an instrument that has been played regularly for at least 37 years. When I had the second pickup installed, I had no idea that the guitar would someday be worth a good chunk of dough. I just wanted a greater range of sound that I was able to get with the single bridge pickup. I enjoy the clean Les Paul-like sound of both pickups in phase. Of course, the original Junior sound can still be attained at the #3 switch position. I think it's a way better guitar than if I had left it alone, but I also know it's probably worth way less. What do you think?

I have an early sixties model SG Standard that belonged to my dad. He bought it new, but I don't know what year. It has the small pickguard, which dates it pre-1965, but the guitar was stolen from me in 1988 by my niece who valued drugs more than her grandfather's memories. After she stole it, her and her partner gouged the serial number out, so I have no idea of the actual date. My dad and I took guitar lessons together in 1964, so I will keep this in my family, but I'd still like to know all I can about this beauty. Do you have any suggestions for determining it's year? Thanks.

    Hey guys
I have a 79 Gibson Sg Exclusive that I bought from a friend a few years ago..Now I only payed $200 for it ,But it had some issues...Some dummy had taken a can of gaypurple spraypaint and painted everything(picgaurd, pickups, knobs, bridges and headstock..)except the fretboard...Luckily for me I am also a custom car painter by day..So I stripped her down and put an awesome liqiud flames and demons paintjob on her ...I bought some 57 classics for it and an aftermarket bridge and some sperzel tuners..
I know that this guitar is rare..I kept all the original spray painted parts...This guitar must have been rewired at some point cause there is no coil tap ability...
Also I have reason to believe that this guitar was owned by someone famous ,most likely a female..and was played "A LOT"..Because on the fretboard in "all" of the basic chord finger positions (16 th fret down)the fretboard is dug out 1/4 inch deep ,almost down to the neck wood (I can send pics to prove it)It kinda makes the fretboard look like an old mans hand ,truly unique!!!!I does not effect the playability at all..
Anyway I was just wondering what the value is custom configured like I have it,as opposed to taking it back to original and leaving the fretboard alone....
I can send all the pics u want..My paintjob is flawless and one of a kind..
    Thank you for your time....

    Hi
I have what I believe to be a '61 SG Special s/n 22923 in Cherry. The guitar is in reasonable condition given the age although the back is badly scratched. Tuners are original however a previous owner appears to have replaced the bridge pickup with a P100 (doh!) I am seeking a p/u replacement from around mid 60's vintage but meantime what has this done to current value? Assuming I can source a suitable p/u what is this looking like value-wise? Thanks

    hey guys,
was hoping that one of you smart individuals could help me identify a friends guitar. He thinks it's a 69 Gibson Firebrand SG he says deluxe. I have read that that model only came out 79-83 I think. The serial # is 80261869 but the strangest thing about this guitar to me is the color, metallic green, or some similar green. It's been sitting for a few years and needs cleaned up and he's smart enough to at least have someone else do that, but would like to guestimate the value and find out just what he has.

  154. I haven't seen this question asked. Is there a way to tell, from the routing of an SG's control cavity, it's era. I think they changed in 1965 or 1966 to straight edges and they started inserting the shielding then. I know the sheild won't fit in my guitar's cavity. I'm pretty sure mine's a '64.

Think I blew my first attempt.

A friend who knows nothing about guitars pulls out an old family guitar last night.

Serial number 27685, 1961 SG Special, with Maestro side-pull. Appears 100% original and not futzed with, may clean up to a VG or VG-.

AND IT'S A TENOR. Talk about scarcity!

I'm puzzled by the Maestro, which isn't supposed to show up till '62, but we do know Gibson was not consistent about embargoing new features until their official rollout dates, so maybe some tenors, since they were special order anyway, got some a bit early?

I'm thinking Ken may have a five-figure guitar here, one of the earliest SGs fitted with a Maestro and a tenor to boot. What do you think?

Very cool. Master volume and tone controls with on/off switch for each pickup. No breaks or repairs. In very good condition for it's age with just a few light marks. Great neck. is this for real? or is it a version somneone customized early on... would this be a slim taper 60's neck? Any help would be appreciated

    SG SPECIAL serial number 516521.
According to the serial number list should be 1965 or 1968.
Gibson service says shipped 4 october 1968 but the previous owner is absolutely sure that he used the guitar in a special concert in February 1968.
He says he bought the guitar at the end of 1965 or 1966.

Large pickguard, pots dated 1963, neck width 1 5/8". The neck is quite thin near the body.
    Probably a 1966?

I have what I think is a 1963 SG special with the S/N 31334 stamped into the headstock. I was told the original color was pelum(?) blue, that has now faded to look almost green. Considering the color and S/N, any clues on the real mfg year and potential value?

I have a Firebrand SG 1979 (sn 73479633), walnut with the serial and logo 'burned' into the headstock. Assuming it is all original (which I believe it is) was wondering what the current market value was (range). A- condition, square case..
    Thanks much

  198. i'm confused on the year of my sg special...S/N is 31334 which would indicate it was made in '61. However, the paint is pelham blue which I believe they started in '63. Does anyone know if they made pelham blue guitars in '61?

Unusual vibrola on a '63 Gibson SG special?

I'm considering buying an all original 1963 Gibson SG special but it has a vibrola that's different from the usual maestro vibrola seen on SG:s from that period. The seller says it's factory installed and to me it looks orginal.

    Here's a pic:

Can anyone help me with this? What's the story with this type of vibrola? Did they use them back then, was it a special order or what?
