Gibson Doubleneck Guitars

Gibsons' mission to build doubleneck guitars started in 1958 , it preserved or even enhanced the company's considerable prestige and credibility, the first doublenecks ever produced on a commercial basis by gibson were :

Gibson EDS 1275 ( 1958 - 1990 )

The gibson EDS 1275 was introduced in 1958 ,the guitar was a double neck , double cutaway 6 and 12 string hollow body until 1962 , from 1962 to present they were SG style solid bodies .

The gibson eds 1275 started production in 1958 and ended production in 1968 , In 1977 gibson reintroduced the gibson eds-1275 and further gained popularity with stars like Jimmy Page endorsing them and were discontinued in 1990 .

Due to the high demand in 1991 gibson reintroduced the EDS-1275 double 12 Gibson historic collection Reissue and were discontinued in 1994 .

1958 - 1959 > $17 000 to $21 000 ( hollow body)
1960 - 1962 > $15 000 to $19 000 ( hollow body )
1962 - 1969 > $7 500 to $12 000 ( Sg Shape / solid body )
1970 - 1994 > $2 500 to $3 200
1991 to 94 > $2300 to $2 700 ( Gibson historic collection reissue )

Gibson EMS 1235 Double Mandolin ( 1958 - 1968 )

The Gibson Double Mandolin , despite its name, is not a mandolin at all. it was a double cutaway and It had a a shortscale guitar neck (see pic to the right ) tuned one octave higher than standard pitch ,

it had one-piece mahogany necks with adjustable truss rods and rosewood fingerboards, both necks were 6 strings .

The gibson EMS 1235 double mandolins were also introduced in 1958 and were thinline hollow bodies until 61 , in 1962 till 1968 they made them in sg style solidbodies .

Later on in 1962 gibson introduced another double cut sg type solid body with a bass neck and guitar neck and called it the Gibson EBS-1250.

Vintage Prices For 2008 :
1958 - 1961 > $17 000 to $20 000 ( Hollow Body)
1962 - 1964 > $12 500 to $16 000 ( SG body )
1965 - 1968 > $8 000 to $12 000

  1. The section "Gibson Double Mandolin" states that it is not a six string and mandolin, but a six string and octave guitar, "see picture at right" it says. Count the strings. There are 8. It is a mandolin. They made both guitar/mando and guitar/octave. They made six string guitar and 4 string bass. They were special order. They would make any combination you were willing to pay for. I have seen pictures of an electric 5 string banjo and electric tenor guitar Gibson double neck.
